ActiveSync Error: ActiveSync was unable to reach the server. Check that the server address and proxy settings are correct. Support Code:80072f78

For those who have Outlook Mobile Access enabled on their corporate Exchange box to push email on to Smartphones running Windows Mobile  you may have come across this error generated by Active Sync:

Active Sync Error
———————————————————————————————————–

ActiveSync was unable to reach the server. Check that the server address and proxy settings are correct.

Support Code:80072f78
———————————————————————————————————–
The smartphones are still able to communicate to the Exchange server via GPRS. This error is only generated by Active Sync when the smartphone is connected to a PC via USB.

I’ve seen this error generated by several i-mate devices (namely SP5, K-Jam and JAMin) running on Windows Mobile OS 5.1.70 and 5.1.195.

I found a fix for this error from Microsoft MSDN forum a while back. Sadly I couldn’t find the direct link to this fix (sorry). However thank you to the person who posted the fix. It had made my life a lot easier.

To fix the proxy error error you will need to save the following in a file with .reg extension and run it(by double clicking on the reg file) on the pc that’s generating the error:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows CE Services]
“AllowLSP”=dword:00000000

For all cases I’ve come across, the above mentioned work around resolved the proxy error and allowed Active Sync client on Windows XP to communicate to the Exchange server via USB.
